Publisher's Synopsis

In 1863, Karl Braun, a member of the Congress of German Economists (Kongress Deutscher Volkswirte) and later a leading politician of the National Liberal Party, published this study on free movement. He discusses the history of free movement in Germany (or the lack thereof) and the detrimental effects of closed borders. Then he goes on to address common objections to free movement and proposes a road for its introduction to the German Confederation (Deutscher Bund). The book contains an introduction by Hansjoerg Walther both on the author and the political background. In an appendix, two contemporary articles are supplied which are referred to in the main text. The material is richly annotated with explanations for obsolete or uncommon words and information on persons and historical background. All texts are in German.
